Definition

Heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest and stomach, which may radiate into the neck. Heartburn is caused when hydrochloric acid (HCL) regurgitates back into the esophagus, otherwise known as acid reflux or gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD). The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) prevents acidic stomach contents from moving back up into the esophagus. If the sphincter muscle isn't working correctly, heartburn can occur. Several factors can be responsible for triggering acid reflux. Hypochlorhydria, or low HCL, can cause stomach contents to ferment. With incomplete signals, the food can't get the message to "move on." When it can't move on, it can reflux into the esophagus.
